UniSmart draws on the talents of a group of international performers, each of whom come with a range of skills. Professionally trained and incredibly experienced, each performer delivers a well-rehearsed, impeccably timed and tightly scripted presentation in a way that bubbles with energy, enthusiasm and spontaneity.
Conrade Rivalland, Daniel Bain, David Ladderman and Lizzie Tollemache represent a veritable league of nations – Mauritius, Australia, Scotland and New Zealand – and an abundance of theatre, comedy and performance skills.
Conrade, a veteran of fifteen UniSmart tours is undeniably one of our most valuable company assets. The former student of cartography long ago shelved his mapping skills in favour of a life on stage. He subsequently studied drama, mime, physical theatre and screen acting. Amidst a hectic career performing at international festivals, Conrade schedules UniSmart presentations as his number one priority.
Daniel was born in Edinburgh and spent a good part of his formative years in NZ. He is wonderfully witty, sometimes wacky and always inventive. In 2002 Dan studied circus and toured the globe performing his own unique brand of theatre. He is a talented stand-up comedian and writes for theatre, film and radio when he is not developing new skills and impressing new students.
David began his career as a street performer, later moving into theatre roles. He was on the UniSmart directors’ radar for several years before the stars finally lined up. In 2013 this Australian-born, top street performer and actor premiered on stage in front of a UniSmart audience to grand applause. UniSmart is proud to include one of Australasia’s most innovative and artistic performers as part of the team.
Lizzie, is an award-winning entertainer whose love of the carnival tradition influences her approach to producing and performing original shows. A veteran of the improvised and scripted theatre and stage scene, Lizzie has been wowing crowds on pavements and performance venues throughout the world ever since she left the school where her careers counsellor advised her “Drama is a nice hobby, but you can’t make a living off it. Go to university and get a real job.” Original, feisty and fantastic, Lizzie is used to surprising people (including her careers advisor).
James William Ward
Born in Doncaster England James’ stage debut was in primary school when he played the part of a French waiter. Ever since that first performance, he has dedicated his life to reaching people as a performer, musician and educator. James trained as an actor at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. In addition, he is a qualified teacher with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Bolton.
Darren, a young actor, fresh out of drama school is eager to add the role of ‘UniSmart Presenter’ to his performance curriculum vitae. The West Yorkshire boy is not completely green, as a veteran of two Edinburgh Fringe festivals and a number of stage performances. He is also a talented writer and producer and since graduating from drama school last year, has gone on to write for radio and theatre.

“It was really informative and enticing. Topics that aren’t spoken about were clearly given across. This helped me to understand others and settle in better. Pure genius.”
