David developed strong leadership and public speaking skills at school. As well as holding the position of captain of both his cricket and football teams, he was the youngest ever president of the Student Council. Upon leaving high school he jumped head first into theatre. studying at the Ballarat Academy of Performing Arts and then New Zealand’s landmark circus training school in Christchurch, CIRCO ARTS.
Following the completion of his studies, David quickly established himself as a prominent member of the NZ street performing community. Between 2004 and 2009, he was half of the iconic ‘Motley Two’ a duo whose highlights included two Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, the Kuala Lumpur Buskers Festival and five World Buskers Festivals in David’s new home of Christchurch.
2007 saw him become a founding member of The Loons Circus Theatre company – a rare entity comprised of award winning circus acts, musicians and actors. They toured constantly until the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes made the company homeless.
David’s growing presence as a charismatic theatre actor (The Butler, Much Ado About Nothing and his own Shakespearian show Battle of the Bastards) combined with his background as a leading street performer and specialist skill of ladder walking, had captured the attention of UniSmart’s directors.
David joined the UniSmart crew in March 2013 and is thrilled to be part of something that he wishes he’d had the benefit of in his own student days!
